Even if a new Caltrain station is place under Pennsylvania at 22nd St, the walk shed for 1/3 mile (shown) is weak due to high hill beside station. Hill area of walk she circled.

By contrast, a 16th St station at Mission Bay/Potrero Flats gives you amazing access to buses, UCSF Mission Bay & Med Zcenter, and surroundings where there’s more regional access demand.

When folks say a 16th St/Mississippi station wd be too close to a 4th/Townsend station at 4000' (1200m), tell that that the following regional rail systems have SHORTER distances and still function: Paris RER: Chatelet to Saint Michel Sydney CityRail: Town Hall to Wynard & more

The point being, a regional rail line CAN operate more like a metro/subway line as it enters the denser business districts, much like BART, WMATA, RER B, and every CityTrain does. Other examples would be great to have.

That seems like an understatement. The through-running on many Tokyo subway lines seems like a more powerful version of this. Many regional trains *become* subways and run as normal subways in the subway line, and in some cases become another regional train at the other end.
