But the little train takes you to real trains (not just NJ Transit, but Amtrak too)! And visiting an airport during the Christmas travel rush is a good way to get a bad impression. (Also, I think EWR is nicer than PHL, although maybe not by a lot.)

Not a lot of software being shipped the week of Christmas...

I'm trying to say: not (or only barely) up once adjusted for the appropriate type of inflation, which is heavily weighted towards housing costs since that's what so much of the money actually goes to

Not really. From page 10 you can see Palo Alto's assessment grew 6.7% overall. When biggest cost to cities is paying staff, and biggest cost to staff is housing, and housing costs are increasing more than 6.7%/year (over the long run), that's not really revenue up.

I found the table on page 18 (changes in assessed value from changes of ownership) more astounding. The assessed value of single family homes in Palo Alto increased by over a billion dollars in the past year (from 644 parcels changing hands). Average increase $1.67m/parcel.

Above was all of Santa Clara county. For Palo Alto, from page 30 of the table, assessed value shares are: 1.6% agricultural & miscellaneous 4.8% industrial & manufacturing 0.0003% mobilehome 5.9% multifamily housing 15.8% office 5.2% retail 66.6% single family housing

page 12 of the report at sccassessor.org/edocman/Annu… breaks it down by assessed value, which should be close to matching tax revenue, I think: 62% single family + condo 10% multifamily housing 28% commercial, industrial, other

(And, for what it's worth, I was going to Jackson Heights, not Manhattan.)
Not sure how representative it was, but the last time I *thought* about getting a taxi at JFK, the line for cabs looked like it was at least an hour long. (I think it was Monday, June 15, 2015, around 10:30pm, after arriving on Delta 468 from SFO.) I took the E train instead.
Uber has broken everyone's brains to the point that so many people have straight-up forgotten that yellow cabs from JFK to Manhattan are a flat-fare $52 ride.

Also worth doing a search online so that you can say "there are N seats open on flight X, can you put us on that"... though not sure how well any of this works on December 22...
Can you try calling to get rebooked? (Though maybe look at the state of the reservation on their website first?)

I've been slowly writing a perma-thread that's sort of relevant, actually:

A photo of an urban environment I like [20/N]: Rue Vauban, 21000 Dijon, France

It doesn't look like there's a lot of it around that location, though: goo.gl/maps/4jQwGdc1y4RfVtHz… (Other European cities have a lot more places like this, perhaps? Or maybe even other parts of Munich?)

In wikipedia, the right thing to do is often to *link* to the article that defines the jargon. Those who know it can skip right over it; those who don't can follow the link. This is a great feature of hypertext.

Seems like latest @strava for Android update crashes when hitting "Finish" at the end of a run, on Android 10.

A real edge case answer: In one international-configured United aircraft layout, I think the middle seat in the exit row is desirable, because the window seat has its legroom obstructed by the evacuation slide container & aisle seat gets lots of jostling from bathroom traffic.

“Privately, officials tried in vain to convince the president that” [statement of fact]
New: White House officials struggled to convince Trump that Ukraine didn't interfere in the election. When asked why he believed otherwise, Trump told one senior official, "Putin told me." washingtonpost.com/national-… by me, @jdawsey1, and @CarolLeonnig

It's interesting that the New York Times is paying (I think) to advertise a tweet to me that I've *already* retweeted...
