box-shadow as a CSS feature sounds nice, but doesn't work because everybody wants a different sort of shadow.

@goetter @thierrykoblentz That breaks: selector order rather than depth wins with nested dir=rtl and dir=ltr; dir=auto not handled.
@kaelig @thierrykoblentz Handles dir=auto and handles having multiple ancestors with different directions (picks nearer).
