For the record, what's wrong with this approach -- "empathy for those with whom I have direct experience" -- is that many of humanity's most pressing problems involve victims that are very far away from the perpetrators, in time/geography/social class.

Incredible New Zealand study on a mystery transmission in a quarantine hotel. For a while, a garbage can was suspected—one of the very, very few known suspected cases of fomite transmission. Turns out... it's aerosols. What a Kuhnian year this has been. wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/27…

Yes, it does indeed look like a duck. But the USPS's new vehicle is designed for safety in a way that SUVs and trucks are not, reports @awalkerinLA trib.al/g0clOa6

I wrote about the problem with electric cars that nobody talks about: They're cars. It's great that we're getting cleaner cars. Yay us! But the issue with American transport isn't gas-fueled cars, it's car-dependent lives. Let's think beyond the car. nytimes.com/2021/02/18/opini…

Last year, a man unable to navigate the Dept. of Building Inspection permitting system threatened to kill himself. But this man is a *permit expediter.* Negotiating this system is his job. And he couldn't do it. Who can? Latest from @esksf missionlocal.org/2021/02/san…

What is missing from this CDC school reopening priority list? Airborne virus guidance! Like almost nothing in 33 page document on ventilation except 1 paragraph on open the windows, but only if feasible. Ventilation should be #2 behind masks! #COVID19 cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nco…

California, as the biggest state in the nation, and one where Democrats hold total control of the government, carries a special burden. If progressivism cannot work here, why should the country believe it can work anywhere else? More here: nytimes.com/2021/02/11/opini…

For progressivism to succeed, it needs to address the basics of people's lives. It doesn't get more basic than housing, transportation, schools. If we can't fix those, I can't say I'm optimistic on climate change, or progressives continuing to hold power.

Just a reminder that Intuit and HR Block make money by charging for a service that should be free. The government could easily provide a comparable service at no charge. These companies have purchased the complicity of Congress - and they have enough $ left for Super Bowl ads.

A barrier was broken today: there is how a cabinet secretary younger than I am. Perhaps another more important barrier too...
This morning, I swore in Pete Buttigieg as Secretary of Transportation. @SecretaryPete is a true problem-solver. He will bring people together to strengthen our nation’s infrastructure. And he will keep breaking boundaries while he’s at it. Congratulations, Mr. Secretary.
