Or, even better, California + Hawaii + Nevada in the 9th Circuit, give Arizona to the 10th Circuit, take Wyoming for the new Seattle-based circuit, and get all of Yellowstone National Park at least in one appellate circuit (although still multiple districts, drat!).
Maybe split the 9th Circuit at the same time as abolishing the Federal Circuit to maintain the principle? Maybe California+Hawaii (San Francisco) vs. all the rest (Seattle)? Or should Arizona and maybe Nevada stick with California?

So expand SCOTUS to 13 (counting the 11 numbered circuits, the DC Circuit, and the Federal Circuit)... and then abolish the Federal Circuit?
Pelosi being pretty explicit about judicial reform is on the table on Hayes right now, observing the original understanding that the number of Supreme Court justices should track the number or circuits

Once Barrett is confirmed a MAJORITY of the Supreme Court will be 5 GOP justices confirmed by senates where the GOP majorities were elected with fewer votes than Dems across all 100 seats. 3 of them by a president who lost the popular vote & 2 by one who lost it in his first term

This is a very important exchange. The Biden campaign should cut some ads based on it.

It seems increasingly like the choice to keep elementary schools closed in places where the virus is contained and there are school safety measures in place is no longer grounded in science.

15/ SCOOP: Facebook ran experiments on an algorithm change in Jan 2018 and when it hurt traffic to right-wing opinion sites, they retooled it to shift harm to progressive NEWS sites, @MotherJones among them. And there's a PowerPoint deck out there: motherjones.com/media/2020/1…

"High-rise living is much more environmentally friendly than suburban single-family housing — downtown residents use half as much water, require far less heating, and take far fewer car trips than denizens of single-family housing. It produces much less traffic ..."
You’re undoubtedly seeing plenty of campaign-related mail & social media claiming that some councilmembers gave $67 million of taxpayer dollars to developers—and you should know why that’s a lie. Here’s the full scoop: link.medium.com/R0cmOw3BIab. #FactsMatter

Bleak but possible scenario I hear from ppl: 1/ No stimulus deal by Nov. 3 2/ Biden wins, Trump loses interest in deal w/ Congress. So: No additional stimulus until Jan. 20 at earliest 3/ New wave of cases Nov-Feb causes severe economic damage just as DC is most paralyzed

My latest for @nytopinion: No, not wearing a mask is not "freedom," even by the standard *conservative* definition of the word. This is insane. It is chaos, which is unfreedom. Democrats must say so. nytimes.com/2020/10/17/opini…

Trump uses federal disaster aid as a cudgel against a state where millions did not vote for him. And millions did.

Hannah Arendt, a German Jew, political theorist and philosopher, was born on this day in 1906. One of her many legacies: Totalitarianism can flourish where people systematically refuse to engage with reality, and are ready to replace reason with ideology and outright fiction.

A big finding in the study: 9 states are barring at least 10% of their adult Black population from voting in 2020. They are AL, AZ, FL, IA, KY, MS, NE, SD, and TN. Tennessee's is the highest: 22%. More than one in 5 Black adult are disenfranchised there.
The Sentencing Project released a new study estimating that 5.2 million people will be barred from voting in the 2020 election due to a felony conviction. In 2016, that number was over 6 million. Progress, but still a long way to go. sentencingproject.org/wp-con…

Waiting in line for hours to vote should be considered less a story on voter enthusiasm and more a story on voter suppression. No one should have to wait hours to vote.
