9/ I can't tell you how many people have asked me if they should travel to certain cities- we are left to our own devices to figure out where there is sustained community transmission. I can find no official webpage that updates this key status for the US. @CDCgov must do better

7/ Exhausting our public health workforce with contact tracing, asymptomatic testing and active monitoring when the cat is out of the bag is not just wasteful, it actively undermines our ability to mount an effective response to an outbreak that is just beginning to explode.

There is a reason for canceling public gatherings. In a pandemic, don't be Philadelphia (held a parade in 1918 when cases started to come up, downplayed cases), be St. Louis (canceled gatherings). More here: pnas.org/content/104/18/7582 @mlipsitch

So far, response in SF bay is reminiscent of diamond princess. That was a disaster. I hope there are different plans in place but so far: testing only ~100 ppl, focusing on ppl present on the previous leg of the voyage only, keeping them all on board... amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/03/05/h…

Why is @nytimes predicting a result in California more than half an hour before the polls close?

One thing I accomplished at this week's @w3ctag meeting in Wellington🇳🇿 was landing a PR to add the beginnings of a new section to our design principles document, on some principles behind the design of features on the Web: w3ctag.github.io/design-prin…

Now seems highly likely that there has been undetected community transmission ongoing in parts of the upper West Coast for weeks, at least. How did we end up with major surveillance failure on par with Italy and Iran? Let's talk about how that happens.

So is this: * Facebook trying to imply that the NHS has better health advice than the US government (or California), or * a sign that Facebook's algorithm for where I am is simply "the last place I gave it location permission" (which I think was Heathrow Airport, on Feb 1)?

This is an astonishing situation -- South Korea has done 35,000+ coronavirus tests. The US has done ~400 and the rollout of testing capability nationwide has been held up by a faulty test.
NEW: Testing for coronavirus in U.S. is key to understanding how widely it may be spreading in communities. But a faulty CDC coronavirus test has been repeatedly delayed. w @carolynyjohnson @lauriemcginley2 washingtonpost.com/health/20…

yearly reminder: when you pay turbotax money to do your taxes, you are in part paying for the tax system to remain complicated enough for turbotax to stay in business. taxes for most people could take 0-5min but turbotax lobbies against it vox.com/2016/3/29/11320386/t…

This truck was in the parking lot of the Silicon Valley office park where I work. The bumper is designed to kill on contact. Most of us bike to work. This is street legal and we’ve got mayors freaking out over 50 lb scooters.

It's outrageous trucks have been allowed to increase in height to the point their hoods are at the roof level of other vehicles. There's only so much engineers can do to make streets safe. Deaths due to these trucks are on lawmakers who allow the #CarLobby to dictate regulations.

Trump's acting DNI didn't tell the government about his foreign lobbying work, potentially violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act. As a result, @NatlSecCnslrs opined, "he should not have a clearance." Great scoop by @iarnsdorf propublica.org/article/trump…
