I took this paragraph to mean the answer is “no” - phishing exercises do not help with real world attacks.

I agree, learn what you need to know when you need it.
I’ve been doing infosec for over a decade and I don’t know a lot on that list, and more importantly, it’s because I didn’t need to know it.
That list is terrible and only serves to prop up egos and gatekeep.
