I’m not trying to defend the policy but I don’t think saying “it’s impossible” is 100% true. WhatsApp knows if I am sending an image and it lowers the quality. And still claims E2E encryption. I think most people would assume, based on that experience, that it’s possible to determine what type of message is being sent & still maintain E2E encryption.

In their letter, they address your concern under the heading, “Client-side scanning.”

I wholeheartedly agree that it's difficult to do, but the section in the letter didn't say impossible. Just that this method could be used for nefarious purposes (my words). But Apple does it now for children's messages and still claims E2E encryption - support.apple.com/en-us/HT21…
