How these properties are adapted for television plays a huge role here. Witcher is well adapted pulp fantasy, whereas something like Wheel of Time is poorly adapted epic fantasy. GoT couldn’t stick the landing, but HotD is off to a great start.

As someone that read tons of fantasy as a kid, I enjoyed The Witcher but hated GoT. On a similar note, enjoyed Vikings and The Last Kingdom, but hated Outlander. I think the common thread is how violence is used to move the story along.
