If you’re interviewing a candidate for a Staff/Lead Engineer role and they’re absolutely amazing, but lack System Design experience because their current job doesn’t give them that exposure, would you still be open to hiring them as a Staff or Lead Engineer?

I think what many companies fail to realize is that if you hire someone that has 100% of the requirements, they’re going to be super bored. Better to hire 80% and give them room to learn and grow. Plus you filter out hires that pretend to know it all.

Your generalization is too broad, often wrong. I know this from 40+ years of software development.
