I’ve had Starlink for a month+. When working, it is fine for streaming or downloading. Unusable for sustained voice or video calls or VPNs, packet loss avg 1% over a day, peaks worse. The Verge review is accurate, especially the concluding paragraphs. theverge.com/platform/amp/22…

author @reckless is spot on. The service quality will eventually improve with thousands of more satellites. Data caps may happen & speeds (especially upload) will never beat fiber. The fact that every single orbital asset of SpaceX has to be replaced every 5 years is troubling

For all the billions being spent, including the questionable amount of public subsidies, we could instead be putting assets in the ground or on poles with 30 to 50+ year lifetime that would always deliver the highest speeds, with electronics refreshed as needed.

Yes, Starlink is a real game changer for ships at sea, aircraft, as well as the truly remote areas that are literally “off the grid”. Those are great uses for this tech. However, if you have electric grid service to your premises, fiber is the best tech & long term value.

Depending on where you are located, fiber optic broadband can be constructed for between 1/3 to 1/10th the cost per mile of paved road. And lasts far longer. And arguably more important to the future of your community.
