Any institution forcing this on instructors and students is committing educational malpractice and ignoring everything we know about effective distance instruction. (There's other bad things too, but I only have 280 characters.)
The community college I adjunct for is also requiring synchronous classes on the original schedule, but encouraging instructors to record them for students who can't attend.

A friend of mine that teaches at a community college shared this student email as to why synchronous-only classes will not work.
