Is it standard practice on @AmericanAir to just change tickets adding a stop in the week before a flight?

I bought nonstop tickets and AA just changed my flight (for my family) to leave earlier, arrive later and make a stop. The timing was a factor when I chose AA and the itinerary. "We didn't charge you". You're damn right you didn't charge me! If I change I pay a fee. #sketchy

I’ve had that happen when they cancelled a flight, rebooking me and my family with a stop. I called and had them rebook so it was direct again.
