As a child I wanted to earn money. I offered to wash cars, do yard work, house work, or whatever for friends, family, neighbors, and strangers. They'd pay me a couple of bucks. I was super happy because that was a lot for a 7yo! Quarters for video games! /1

One of my first wage lessons as a boy was collecting used newspapers from my neighborhood, dragging them home in a wagon, unloading them in the shed, then loading the entire load into a truck and getting paid at the recycling center. Total? Maybe $30 for dozens of hours of work.

Hah! That’s great. I did something similar during elementary school. Collected as many of the other kid’s soda cans as possible. It was like pennies a piece, but it added up!
