When discussing police tech and privacy, I’m always reminded of how German police caught the serial autobahn shooter (700+ shootings over 5+ years); they used license plate scanners and stored the data, which was controversial in Germany for privacy reasons (and illegal?).

I’m certain they had obtained a warrant to do this, which is certainly permitted in order to investigate crimes for which the policy have probable cause.

I was living in Europe at the time and there was criticism how the police caught him. I can’t find a news account that goes into it, but did find this. And I bring it up only to illustrate the challenges in this space. npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/…
