I'd love to see you do a video about this whole process too! I just re-read that post and it's way more intricate of a process than I remembered it being! 😅
I agree, and that's why I rarely check the box. I prefer to say very clearly what the relationship is at the beginning of the video. I checked the box for my 4 hour desk build stream cause I figured people would be dropping in and out and might not hear my initial disclosure
my understanding of the FTC's rules is that you need to clearly disclose when you get something of value, whether cash or a product. They don't specify what form that disclosure should take, so either verbal at the beginning of the segment or checking that box is fine.
It's super ambiguous, mainly because the definition varies significantly by country. It's anyone's guess whether The Algorithm takes that checkbox into account. 🤷♂️
from the research I have done, it's a tool youtube provides that you can use to be in compliance with your local laws. e.g. if you don't disclose a paid promotion in the content of your video you can check that box to show it on the screen instead.
When we created the first NFTs back in 2014, @mccoyspace & I were trying to support artists and center their needs as blockchain technologies took off. In my first time writing for @TheAtlantic, I explain how things didn’t go exactly as planned since then. theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv…
