It's simple enough if someone is around for redirects and auth codes, harder when it's an automated script.

Yeah, you'll want to set up a page that can generate an access token for you. Some services like GitHub provide this built in.

github is easy. so were twitter and facebook. so is read access to flickr but writing to flickr i get nothing but auth token errors

Flickr launched OAuth 1 not that long ago, before it was their own thing. Could be the library hasn't updated for that?

could be, but what's odd is it works locally, but not on the server.

hmm, could be misconfigured redirect URI settings then? Try making a new app with credentials you only use for production
