There are lots of reasons the #IndieWeb faded, but I think OAuth deserves quite a bit of blame.

OAuth 2 is simple enough you don't need a library, I have a simple guide here aaronparecki.com/2012/07/29/…

It's simple enough if someone is around for redirects and auth codes, harder when it's an automated script.

Yeah, you'll want to set up a page that can generate an access token for you. Some services like GitHub provide this built in.

github is easy. so were twitter and facebook. so is read access to flickr but writing to flickr i get nothing but auth token errors

What language? Try one of the clients listed at flickr.com/services/api/

Flickr launched OAuth 1 not that long ago, before it was their own thing. Could be the library hasn't updated for that?
