Reading about the tech stack undergirding most Mastodon/fediverse instances, and I am sadly not optimistic that there is a practical path to scale this past a small fraction of twitter's size in the medium term

It's actually worse than that, the protocol itself needs some serious work to scale it up too.

Yep! I simply don't see how someone with millions followers practically would *work* with this protocol

Ironically the problem is already solved if the protocol worked the other direction, aka the web. We know how to scale websites to be able to be accessed by millions of people at a time.
