i love to update the operating system on my television. its so cool that there's another little computer in there which does nothing for me that i despise and have to take care of

Best stick to streaming boxes, Roku and AppleTV get updated for longer than the big tv makers update their smart tv O/S.

hard to find a good display these days that isn't "smart." I have an LG OLED with web OS that I use a Chromecast with.

Time for someone to find some easy teardown/bypass models. Or a market gap for monitor manufacturer to step up with bigger pixels, for large TV but with 'only' 4k res

It does! "Commercial displays" used in airports and things. Sadly some of those are getting smarts now too, but sometimes that's limited to a serial port

huh, I wouldn't have figured those kinds of displays would be 4k, 120hz, HDR capable, etc., but maybe economies of scale make that make sense.

I take it back. I searched around and nearly all the commercial displays I'm finding now also have a computer inside usually with some sort of digital signage platform preinstalled 🤦♂️
I'm hanging on to my 2015 ViewSonic not-smart commercial display as long as I can

I would sure hope those are hardwired in via ethernet, but there's no guarantees I guess
