maybe not the best way but i had a good experience with waschinski/photo-stream on github (jekyll)

yes i ran it from my laptop with ngrok and basic auth on apache

Basic Auth is super easy but you can use OIDC or OAuth via just about any IDP and limit access to certain domains or specific emails Happy to help if you want a hand :)
