To be clear, open source is nice but not a requirement. However I don't want to require that someone who has no current affiliation with a big name like Apple/Google/Amazon have to create an account on that service.

Hey @aaronpk , checkout havenweb.org - requires hosting it somewhere, but might be nicer than NextCloud. More of a blogging-style focus than pure photos but it supports private RSS as a bonus!
