years after the hype died out, 3d printing lives on with niche products on etsy, and i must admit, it's cool. custom lampshades, a lil organizer for my aeropress - they're things that benefit from that ability to do tiny quantities of custom things.
i guess we have completed the hype curve - though the initial hype expected stuff like "a 3d printer manufacturer that became gigantic" and "print-on-demand becoming commonplace in the shapeways style", both of which didn't pan out
