I'm p sure a little RSS reader that has a little comment box and a “like” button under each item that send little web mentions would be the perfect set up for a wholesome, self-owned network

I had a discussion with friends about exactly this about a year ago and would still love the idea, kinda the social RSS.

Me too! I've been thinking about rolling Watchtower into Aperture so it's just one app. Aperture is based on Laravel so there's plenty of tools and support for deploying that already. It's just a *lot* of work simplifying and documenting this stuff to make it easier for others.
