I have all the sympathy in the world for the signal team right now. At the same time, it's *deeply* problematic that we're all rushing to yet-another centralized infrastructure, even if it's run by people we like and trust, in order to mediate really basic text communications.
Signal is experiencing technical difficulties. We are working hard to restore service as quickly as possible.

I think we (technologists, and in 2021 I think that means "everyone who cares about the use of technology") bear the responsibility for this. Moxie's been highly against federation, which is a damn shame, because he's been in a position to move things.

For sure, and I 100% agree with the matrix folks. Moxie's argument basically boils down to "it's easier to make the trains run on time with a centralized service." 🤔

Yep he's not wrong, and I understand that argument from a product design standpoint. But I also disagree with it for all the reasons in that Matrix post!

For sure - I mean, China is moving away from fossil fuels and building mass transit way faster than western nations. Does that mean we should ditch democracy to prevent global warming? Honestly, maybe, depending on what your values are. I'm not ready to take that path, though.

Indeed. I also keep coming back to this page, hardly believing it is still there. Not because it is about XMPP, but about the three freedoms of choice: client, service, platform. developers.google.com/talk/o…
