Ironically, favicons ended up going the link rel discovery path later too! even one of the first uses of hardcoded paths realized it was a bad idea.

Yeah, that was one of the things I was hoping to imply with this. :) Of course every browser is still stuck forever checking for favicon.ico if no <link rel="icon"> is found, but, whatever.
