Problem is the people you want to take those standards up make money by locking you in behind their wall.
Brid.gy did that and it worked around 2 years ago, then API access started getting degraded/removed and.. it all fell apart.

Still works fine with Twitter, including this tweet. Facebook has been locking down their API tho.
