i will never understand why mirrors flip the image horizontally but not vertically

Every 6 months I watch a video with the explanation, then I say “of course, it makes sense now”. Then time passes. Rinse repeat.

I've watched detailed explanation several times, and I always end up thinking, “oh, that makes perfect sense”. Then when I think about it later I still don't get it.

I’ve been pondering why images in mirrors are flipped L-R but not up-down. I’ve concluded that it’s because, when we turn to face a mirror, we invariably prefer turning about a vertical axis (thereby staying the right way up) than a horizontal one (and flipping ourselves over).
