Every game is just Unreal or Unity and the same clunky shit, running worse than games from the 2000s. Modern CPUs and threadsafe code allows for insanely complex simulation. Imagine Dwarf Fortress designed ground-up for 64 cores. So where are the autistic passion projects?

Faster processors = lazy code You dont need to write efficient code as everyone’s playing on high tech equipment and everyone is fine as long it runs at 60 fps Its the same reason why architecture hasn’t gotten better despite more efficient building methods

This is why I was sad to see John Carmack leave game development. He was at least someone obsessed with code and tech. Now he is involved with AI after Virtual Reality was a bust.

You either build a game, or you build a game engine. Otherwise you will be burnt out. Why don't you make a custom forum software with minimal JavaScript overhead and extremely fast backend? Make your own CDN and database management. All using C++ or Rust

destiny talks about this a lot. he says everyone was able to get lazy due to machine power growing so great. now there is too much extra room for programmers/designers to slack. structural limitations can be helpful for creativity inversely to unlimited resources

The romhacking scene is currently thriving. Lots of new translations have been released in just the last couple of years, and many old games have just recently gotten definitive translations.

I've remembered when the first Unreal was a revolutionary FPS vidya that became the inspiration for Halo. Nowadays, Unreal is associated being a janky toolset for soidevs. I swear the masters of Unreal jank would be the 'Running With Scissors' Postal devs.
