I am genuinely staggered by how pervasive alcoholism is in the US. I've encountered a lot of alcoholics but I never would have guessed that 1 out of 10 Americans over the age of 12 will drink more than 4 of those 750ml "fifths" every week. Just crazy.

It's because we don't have anything but cheddar cheese.

You've talked about your high-school and Associates; but being a weirdo, you probably never got to experience young adults treating their life like a sitcom and being at the bar every night or just sitting around drinking; and not because you're rural and bored, it just is.

Opioids, too. A drunk, stoned nation is easier to feed the bread and circuses to.

"It is more socially acceptable to be seen drinking alcohol than drinking milk" etc. etc.

I drink like a few glasses of wine per year and a champagne glass on new years eve

Honestly just think of ot like a lite version of the opioid epidemic, a lot of these top drinkers are probably doing it for similar reasons, with the added benefit of it being cheaper and legal

I often think of myself as a person who drinks a lot and then shit like this pops up lol. My alcoholic intake over the last couple of months has been maybe 10-12 beers and 300ml-500ml of vodka (only when socializing)
