Russian MPs suggest giving birth to imprisoned women in exchange for freedom, Russian media report.
The State Duma MP from Primorye Valery Seleznev proposed to increase the birth rate in the country at the expense of women who are serving sentences in Russian prisons. In his opinion, this will help to solve several problems at once.
According to Seleznev, at present, there are about 45 thousand women in Russian prisons. Most of them are serving sentences on non-serious articles.
"Many of these women are capable of giving birth to children. The state can offer them a kind of deal, in which a woman's sentence is terminated and in case she gives birth during such a "vacation", the rest of the term is canceled," the MP suggested. He added that thanks to this approach it will be possible to solve several problems in the country, including demographic and socio-humanitarian. Earlier, the Federation Council proposed to introduce criminal punishment for inducement to abortion.
