Even if this headset doesn't do much more than Gear VR, the low price will finally introduce VR to the masses. The impact of this will be felt industry wide. It's a "gateway drug".

I have Gear VR and I'm not seeing much reason to invest in the Oculous Go.

I wouldn't either, after what you must have spent on your phone + headset.

I might be in the same boat, but I’ve always been an iPhone user, so it’s really my first experience with mobile VR

I've never tried it either. The only reason I would really want one is to show other people. Maybe I'll pick one up this holiday season if I see one on a crazy good sale.

I was hoping Oculous GO would offer more but I totally see the benefit of not having to use a phone. Especially if it's for a family of players.

I wish I had a gear so I could give you a better comparison, but end of the day, it was made for VR vs made for holding a phone, I think you’ll have an overall better experience, wish I had more insight :)
