You may need to repair the launcher, you can do so by going to the Start menu > right-click Minecraft Launcher > 'more' > open 'App Settings' > within settings, click 'repair' and 'reset'. Try that to see if it helps and let us know if you're still stuck! ^AM

Just to confirm, is this graphical issue only happening when playing on older versions of Minecraft: Java Edition? If so, we'd recommend running the latest version of the game, as older versions of the game are no longer supported. ^FF

Are you both playing on Java Edition or on Bedrock? You'll both need to be on the same version of the game in order to play together. Also, is this a Realm that you're trying to connect to? If so, try changing the world slot but be sure to back up your world first. ^FF
