.@MehdiRHasan says there’s no real comparison between Trump & Nixon.
“Watergate is a walk in the park next to the Jan. 6th attack on American democracy, and the almost-assassination of an American VP at the hands of a mob incited by the American president.”
Republican conspiracy theorists aren't just running for powerful public offices, they're also winning GOP primaries. The threat to democracy is real. (via @MaddowBlog) msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show…
There are two major takeaways from Thursday's Jan. 6 cmte. hearing:
•Eastman’s plan to have Pence postpone certification of Biden's election win was illegal.
•The threat this scheme posed to democracy was and remains very real. (via @thereidout Blog) msnbc.com/the-reidout/reidou…
The takeaway from today’s hearing? Trump & his team *knew* what they were doing.
“They all knew it was bull[💩],” @WalshFreedom tells @mehdirhasan. “And as Trump went out there every day & spread the bullcrap out there to the American people, none of them said anything.”
Today’s January 6th committee hearing proved that this isn’t just about pressure or a mob riot — people were planning to kill our most senior political figures, @mehdirhasan says: “I never thought I’d ever say this, but thank God for Mike Pence that day."
"Our democracy came dangerously close to catastrophe": Jan. 6 Chair Thompson discusses "pressure" campaign facing VP Pence on Jan. 6, adding of calls to reject 2020 electoral votes, "[Pence] knew it was illegal. He knew it was wrong." msnbc.com/live
Pence has been called a hero for his actions on 1/6. @WalshFreedom disagrees: "He's not a hero…He did his job.”
“He did what he was constitutionally sworn to do,” he says. And despite threats Pence faced, Walsh adds, he "doesn’t have the courage or the decency to speak up.”
.@mehdirhasan: “We stand to learn a lot from today’s hearing. But we would stand to learn a lot more if Mike Pence stopped being a politician for a minute and started telling the whole truth about what he saw in the leadup to January 6th. Our democracy is still at stake.”
In his January 6 speech at the Ellipse, Donald Trump mentioned Mike Pence at 12:06 PM. Twice.
And again at 12:15.
And at 12:37.
And 12:49.
Here is what Trump said to his fanatically devoted crowd... and what the crowd did afterward:
LIVE BLOG: The House Jan. 6 committee returns today for a third public hearing focused on VP Pence. Follow along for a breakdown of key moments. msnbc.com/congress/jan-6-hea…
Join us at noon ET for Day 3 of the January 6th public hearings. Our special coverage kicks off with @mehdirhasan and continues with @mitchellreports and @HallieJackson at 12:30pm ET, followed by the hearing in full. Stream it all on Peacock in the MSNBC hub.
We’ve been so focused on the 1/6 hearings and on gun violence in America that it’s easy to forget the war in Ukraine is still raging on. @mehdirhasan takes a look where things stand on Day 112 of the conflict:
“Once you define the world in Cold War terms, you inevitably end up basically overlooking whatever human rights abuses the people on your side are doing,” @PeterBeinart tells @mehdirhasan. “We have to keep MBS on our side, because we’ve divided the world in zero-sum terms.”
It’s “ironic for Biden to say he’s going to Saudi Arabia to help peace,” @aalodah tells @mehdirhasan. “What kind of peace is MBS making when he’s making the worst humanitarian crisis in Yemen … threatening Lebanon, Iraq, and all neighboring countries?”
What was it that Joe Biden called Saudi Arabia during the campaign trail?
@mehdirhasan shows how actions speak louder than words when it comes to Biden’s stance on Saudi Arabia (really, all presidents going back to FDR).
At least 108 Republican candidates who embrace Trump’s ‘Big Lie’ about the 2020 election have won primary races so far.
That’s why the 1/6 committee hearings are so important, @mehdirhasan says. “There must be accountability, or it’ll all just happen again.”
"There are many ways that the law was violated,” @JillWineBanks says of Trump & John Eastman’s efforts to stop the certification of the 2020 election. “This was a crime of obstruction of a congressional proceeding that needs to be indicted.”
Trump’s all about ratings, and by that metric, the #January6thhearings are a hit. But producers want feedback from its main audience of one (no, not Donald).
As the future of U.S. democracy becomes a spectator sport, @mehdirhasan asks: What does Merrick Garland make of it all?
TONIGHT on @msnbconpeacock: As Biden gears up to visit Saudi Arabia next month, @peterbeinart and @aalodah join @mehdirhasan to discuss whether Biden’s flip-flop on the kingdom is pragmatism vs. idealism - or could there be more to the story?
