The key clause is “used to see themselves as…” The GOP has been appealing to extremists for decades. @DavidCornDC excellent American Psychosis shows this dangerous dance. Mr Kruse & Mr Zelizer’s essay collection Myth America shows GOP retconning of history to hide the dance.

Many are being radicalized in their churches. Donnie Swaggart proudly stated today that their church, which is filled with people of color, is not woke. Every day, Frances & Friends, spews bigotry, foolishness and misinformation. Roger Stone was a guest.SBN went all in for Trump.

Well, if they're relieing on the ignorance of their voters their in luck. TFG has managed to build a base of fools who follow him blindly, no matter how ridiculous his machinations may be. They're no 'clear-eyed warriors'. They're just dopey weekend warriors ready to protect #45.
Kruse is right. Marge Taylor-Greene is considered a clear-eyed true teller in the Republican party these days.. that's how far they have sunk.

Yeah, it used to be about truth and pragmatism.

1976: NYT points out that Reagan’s welfare queen story was based on lies. Reagan kept using it. “Warriors of the truth”, hmm? “The “welfare queen” item in Mr. Reagan's repertoire is one of several that seem to be at odds with the facts.”… nytimes.com/1976/02/15/archi…

Just because they "used to see themselves as clear-eyed warriors of the truth," doesn't mean they actually ever were. Now it's just more obvious they don't.

There is a significant difference between "Trumpism" and classic conservatism. Trumpism is what is being played now...
