You're downplaying it because crying wolf has a backlash. "Fascism!!" "Racist" "nazi!!" "Hitler!!!" "democracy lost!!" Using wild hyperbole works for awhile then loses power with most, then we tune you out, the fear mongering falls flat. Simple as that.
