Russian leaders were only pissed at the idea of Ukraine joining NATO, because they believed they 'owned' Ukraine and that Ukrainians aren't 'real'. That is NOT a legitimate 'security concern' that should be heeded or respected.

Ukraine was a piece of land that Russia wanted since the fall of the USSR and the hostility from the Russian side started 100s of years prior to that point. it was never about NATO. it's hard to comprehend how the westerners are still pondering over this really simple question.
