He might not be able to get it done in the long run but in the interim he’s killing,bombing,destroying,devastating that entire country there won’t be anything left but rubble by the time he finishes if the international community doesn’t intercede and stop him.

Maybe the aim isn't too occupy, but to say to the world, "this is what I'm prepared to do to a neighbour, don't even think about placing nukes or anything else close to my borders." Energy other alternative I've thought of makes less sense.
