Children are being hospitalized in record numbers as the Omicron variant surges in the U.S. So why then are kids and teachers heading into classrooms in person right now? @mehdirhasan has strong thoughts about the current state of the school closure debate:

Life is a rask dipshit. COVID is low risk to kids and the effects of not going does far more damage than COVID.
Remote schooling isn’t an acceptable substitute for in-person learning. Mandatory vaccinations, masks, & testing are affordable options to ensure schools are adequately safe, so why can’t public schools stay open? If schools aren’t essential services then then nothing is.

If schools aren’t open, where else would kids go to nap, color and drink chocolate milk for two hours a day, every day… And parents had kids knowing they would outsource them to schools for K-12; they didn’t sign-up for having them around daily.
