.@mehdirhasan: Why should thousands of US troops stay in Afghanistan indefinitely, or even a few more months, to fight an unwinnable war with the Taliban on behalf of people who aren't interested in fighting it? @EliLake: Because a stalemate is preferable to a Taliban takeover.

Mehdi: "Why should we believe [the generals] when they now try and corner a fourth president into staying for 'just a few more years! Victory is just around the corner!'?" Eli: "Well, I didn't say victory. I said stalemate."

Mehdi: “Just to be clear for our viewers, Eli: Were you saying that we should be there for another 20 years, or for how long?” Eli: “However long it takes...”

Negating a potential terrorism base Denying out enemies an ally in the region with rich natural resources and positioning near our allies
Another famous stalemate. Although, this one doesn’t cost any money or lives:
Bari, I cannot comprehend your apparent stance on this. Stalemate was not an option. The Taliban were an inevitability; it’s withdraw or surge. If speed of Afghan collapse = speed of US evac, then practically 100% of what we’re seeing was predestined.
??????? Preferable HOW? HOW does this serve U.S. interests--at ALL? What exactly do the American people get out of a never-ending stalemate? Be specific, Lake.

I mean, your take seems dishonest. Reports out that the crews that took care of the aircraft were pulled by Biden. So, they had no way to use those aircraft. US military literally fled in the cover of night from bases w/o telling their Aghan allies.

Why is that interviewer so kinetic and twitchy? Unless he has a medical condition, my instinct is that he's flamboyant in order to hide gaps in his preparation.
Did @EliLake volunteer or serve?Anyone in @EliLake family serve or going to volunteer?? Curious.
