Though Islamophobia played an incidental role in Trump’s rise, the real roots are economic, the inevitable leveling of the global playing field, which many (including me) saw coming decades ago. The advent of the internet hastened that leveling.

I was a civil servant in training in Tennessee, when 9-11 happened. My first comment was I hope people don’t blame the Afgani people for this attack…my fellow trainees verbally pounced on me, and told the “ Arabs are cheering in NJ “ story.
