The problem is that’s exactly the strategy: float someone who’s terrible and then pick someone slightly less terrible to placate the left and make them think they dodged a bullet

Since you mention Larry Summers I’m obligated to recall seeing him comment on a panel at Harvard in Nov 2008. He got a call mid-comment, got up, said “it’s the White House,” and started to walk out. As he did someone said loudly “well now we’re all Fucked.”
