Biden’s selection of a retired general to be defense secretary has raised eyebrows, but what Lloyd Austin has done *since* his retirement is far more important: "Some things in America still transcend party politics," @mehdirhasan explains. "Like a love of defense contractors."

We are sickened. This is how we got militarized vehicles in small towns across America! The revolving door, and the defense contractors amplify fear, hate, division and racism, because it is good for business.
Even in the private sector executives routinely agree to non-compete terms whereby they are not permitted to migrate to a new position at a competing company for a certain period. We should expect no less from a government appointment.

I understand the importance of civilian control of the military but this revolving door affects civilians too, surely there should be some restriction on a gap between spending time as a board member or an adviser to a company like this and serving in a public position?
