That doesn't excuse the millions of followers who have been looking for politicians who would stoke and wallow in their hate-filled attitudes. Poisonous leaders, catering to the worst instincts, particularly of white men, have been feeding on those instincts.

I was pretty apolitical until my 30s, registered R but voting for both Rs and Ds in Tucson, AZ. That changed when Gingrich came on my TV one day and blamed Bill Clinton personally after some military jet crash. Within days I'd switched my registration to D and never looked back.
