Many international observers have – rightfully – expressed horror at the ongoing atrocities in Ukraine. However, as @MehdiRHasan and @AymanM point out, there have been more than a few instances where certain commentators’ shock at the war in Europe ebbs into outright racism.
In tonight’s #minirant, @MehdiRHasan tells you everything you need to know about President Biden’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, in 60 seconds. WATCH:
What is it about Putin that brings out the best and the worst in people? By worst, @MehdiRHasan means the U.S. conservatives who are cheerleading for Putin, while a large part of the rest of the world is unified against him. WATCH:
A bit of good news: tonight marks the one-year anniversary of the @MehdiHasanShow on @MSNBC. @MehdiRHasan looks back at a year filled with fascism-focused monologues, #mini-rants, and even a little bit of Ben & Jerry’s. Thank YOU for making it possible:
The former Prime Minister of Finland, @alexstubb, joined @MehdiRHasan to discuss whether his country should take steps to join NATO – and how such an action would be received by Russia, Finland’s next door neighbor.
Fmr. President Trump, Mike Pompeo and Tucker Carlson are now singing a different tune when it comes to praising Vladimir Putin. Hypocrisy much? “That’s the difference between people who stand for something,” says @TimothyDSnyder, “And the people who stand for nothing.”
In December, @RepJayapal told @MehdiRHasan that she was certain ‘Build Back Better’ would pass, but thanks to her colleague, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), it's now effectively dead. Listen as she tells Mehdi what she thinks now:
"This notion that people advance that Muslims are infiltrating and using democratic systems to undermine Western democracies is very noxious and very dangerous … that’s why I believed this letter was so powerful." - @BriHReed on @MehdiHasanShowyoutube.com/XOEBe6AnArg
.@jasonintrator on his observation, in Kyiv, that some on the left view Ukraine as a fascist state:
“In this case, we must recognize the left condemns imperialism, whether it’s by the United States or by any other country.”
Polling from the Washington Post shows Republican voters have a higher approval rating of Putin than they do of Biden.
“There is a utility to Right-wing media,” says @pastpunditry. “All of the incentives are there for the Right to continue to have propaganda networks.”
Why are prominent figures across U.S. right-wing media doubling down on support for Putin as he’s launching an invasion of Ukraine?
“Now that they’ve embraced total moral bankruptcy, what more do they have to give?” asks @mehdirhasan.
NEW: Pres. Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he will stay in Kyiv amid a Russian invasion.
“I think he’s doing it at personal risk because if the Russians do go into Kyiv,” says @steven_pifer, “they’re definitely about regime change and he would be #1 on the list.”
In a rambling war declaration Thursday morning, Vladimir Putin threw everything at the wall in hopes something might stick.
But “denazification”? That is pure Putinesque projection, @mehdirhasan says…
And he brought receipts.
