WATCH: Is @NikkiFried, Florida’s only statewide elected Democrat, going to run against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis next year?
@mehdirhasan asked; here’s how she answered:
.@WhipClyburn still worries that cries to "Defund the police” could undermine reform. In the '60s, he tells @mehdirhasan, "'Burn, baby, burn' destroyed the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and I think 'Defund the police' will do the same thing to Black Lives Matter."
Last night, Biden called out white supremacy as “terrorism.”
“I couldn’t agree more,” says former white extremist @cpicciolini, who gives a clinic on “the seeds of white supremacy” in America.
“But what I also didn't hear Joe Biden say is what he was going to do about this.”
Why does Facebook bow to India’s government? “Those types of things would come up all the time” at FB, says @alexstamos, where content moderators “also report up through the same structure as the people whose job it is to keep governments happy.” He has some ideas to fix that:
Last night, Biden called white supremacist terror the “most lethal” threat to the nation. But what is the administration going to do to fight it? @cpicciolini joins @mehdirhasan tonight to discuss at 7 p.m. ET on @peacocktvpeacocktv.com/channels/the-c…
.@MehdiRHasan: “What’s your reaction” to today’s federal raid on Rudy Giuliani’s home and offices?
Fmr. Impeachment manager, Rep. @ericswalwell: “Who could have seen this coming, Mehdi?”
Watch:
No big deal. Just a Muslim primetime TV host asking the first Muslim elected to Congress how his faith has informed his work as a state attorney general.
@KeithEllison: “I’m focused on justice, fairness, and I think a person of any faith tradition could feel the way I do.”
“I still would have preferred President Sanders, but you've got to give it to Joe Biden. He has stepped up and responded to the needs of the people.” -- @KeithEllison
Just since the Chauvin verdict, there have been 12 more police killings in the U.S. “Sadly, this problem is one that we've had in our country for at least 100 years,” @KeithEllison tells @mehdirhasan. “I’m hoping that nowadays something new will happen.”
“The pageantry is usually what people remember” of presidential speeches, fmr. Carter speechwriter @JamesFallows says. But this one *is* special: “For the first time in history there will be a female vice president and a female speaker of the House sitting behind the president.”
WH Deputy Press Secy Karine Jean-Pierre: "[Biden] believes health care is a right, not a privilege."
@mehdirhasan: "Then many people listening would say it should be free."
Watch:
D.C. police officer Michael Fanone broke down on TV last night, discussing his near-death experience in the Capitol insurrection. @mehdirhasan presses Rep. Joe Neguse: Do the 139 House Republicans who voted to overturn the election owe Fanone an apology? Watch the answer:
Why did Minn. AG @KeithEllison say he felt “bad” for Derek Chauvin? “It's just because I spent 16 years sitting in cells talking to defendants about what's going to happen next,” he says. “I don't want to dismiss his humanity just because he dismissed George Floyd's humanity.”
Minnesota AG @KeithEllison personally led the Chauvin prosecution. But what about other cases against cops elsewhere? “Hopefully,” he tells @mehdirhasan, “our prosecution raises the bar and shines a light on what is possible if you really put your shoulder into the case.”
What do we know about the search warrant served on Giuliani today? Two things, says @CevallosLaw: First, “Rudy Giuliani has shown that he's not really tech-savvy.” And second, feds may be looking for something that “presumably might relate to the former president.”
