The lockdown in public housing towers also “lacks epidemiological sense. Forcing people into even closer quarters creates a pressure cooker environment where family outbreaks are even more likely.” - @MarylouiseMcla1 #victorialockdown #COVIDー19

Replying to @chappell_louise
It would also be better at reducing infection rates; but I’m not an economist, so that’s for the Government to decide.

Greater Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire have been forced back into lockdown for at least six weeks, after the state recorded almost 200 new cases of COVID-19 in just 24 hours. To discuss more, @Jacquifelgate spoke with epidemiologist Mary-Louise McLaws. #7NEWS

Mary-Louise McLaws is an epidemiologist and WHO advisor urging Melbournians to wear masks, socially distance, and take the test. If we do that, we can get the numbers back down.

Reactive vs Proactive: Don't wait for R>1 as alert to act will be too late. Using regional small but increasing daily case numbers alert to act easy to miss. Watching 2*incub periods easier to see when to be proactive.

With respect, after SARS, a whole group of experts reviewed what happened and how it could have been managed better. These learnings are very useful with Covid19 and we are benefitting from them.

Sometimes quotes are taken out of context. To clarify I support WHO guidelines & approach to developing them. Yes, I do get tired of particle size argument, we know viral infections & COVID patients expel both airborne & droplets but we interpret epi pattern for major spread mode

To clarify- I am frustrated that there is a focus on ‘particle sizing’ instead of what we see in the epidemiological pattern supports droplet spread in the community. Medical masks protect health workers during routine care. I support WHO guidelines.

Time to lock down all of Melbourne, @MarylouiseMcla1 tells me on #abcPM @RadioNational @abcnews and residents in the locked-down high rises who are infected should be moved to somewhere safer. She says Australia needs a purpose built facility for large #COVID19 breakouts.

Thank you Melbournians! Ring fencing postcodes (localised lockdown of hotspots) isn’t pleasant - but it does work and we are grateful. Keep safe, get tested, exercise. We're barracking for you ❤️
