Mandatory masks will help to prevent the spread of COVID 馃憣. Government, shopping malls and venues should hand out free masks to augment the current physical distancing and hand hygiene stations. Assisting everyone's cooperation is more effective than fines.

And transmission in Vic could have been prevented had returning Syd travellers been asked to isolate for 14days. Instead they were told to isolate until they were tested and if they had a neg result no isolation was required! What happened to the 14d incubation period?
I saw footage on ABC afternoon news of masks being handed out in Sydney. So it is happening in some places.
Surgical masks cost ~AUD0.20 in South Africa at the local shop. Free masks for the entire country would barely dent the federal budget.

I am fairly sure that Vic police were handing out masks for the first few days when it was made compulsory in Vic, at the start of the second wave. A fine was only issued if people refused the mask.
