🚨 BORDER SECURITY
Border security has been a campaigning issue for Republicans against every Democratic candidate. They use the same fearmongering tactics — saying Democrats want “open borders” and to let violent criminals into our country.
So let's look at a few FACTS that the
@GOP @HouseGOP @SenateGOP will NEVER tell you.
1) Let me start with this one, bcos it's probably the most crucial - the
@GOP have called to DEFUND the Department of Homeland Security. Guess who defends our borders?
Yup, you guessed it, the Department of Homeland Security.
I guess Republicans aren't THAT concerned with border security. 🤷
2) In 2021, the
@GOP voted AGAINST the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which INCLUDED $430 million for Customs and Border Protection to spend on “the construction and modernization of land ports of entry and equipment and fixtures for operations” and $3 billion “for critical investments in CBP’s Border Patrol stations and land ports of entry.”
I guess Republicans don't care THAT much about border security. 🤷
3) In April 2022, with the ending of Title 42, Biden's administration requested an increase in funding for CBP for fiscal year 2023 — roughly $15 billion. That would include more than $5.4 billion for border security operations.
December 2022 - the Department of Homeland Security requested more than $3 billion from Congress.
The
@GOP voted AGAINST BOTH requests.
I guess Republicans don't care THAT much about border security. 🤷
4) November 2022, President Biden directed the Customs and Border Protection to DEPORT immigrants that posed a threat to the U.S — Texas Republicans took him to court declaring his directions "illegal."
I guess Republicans aren't THAT concerned with border security. 🤷
5) The
@GOP voted AGAINST Biden's FY23 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill which provided the Customs and Border Protection with $16.464 billion in base discretionary funding, as well as $1.563 billion to address increased encounters at the Southwest Border.
In total, $7.153 billion was provided for the U.S. Border Patrol for operations, hiring, and Border surge requirements.
In addition, $230 million was provided for between-the-ports technology such as autonomous surveillance towers, and an overall amount of $582 million is provided for CBP investments. The bill included $65 million specifically designated for 300 additional Border Patrol Agents, as well as $60 million for additional CBP personnel at ports of entries. Also, $70 million was provided for Non-intrusive Inspection equipment (NII) at the ports of entry.
Biden also provided the Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) with $8.419 billion, along with an additional $340 million to respond to increased encounters at the Southwest Border. Total base funding represents a $319 million increase above the President's budget request.
I guess Republicans don't care THAT much about border security. 🤷
6) May 2023 -
@HouseGOP passed debt limit legislation that would freeze Fiscal Year 2024 federal spending at FY 2022 levels. That meant a 22% cut to non-defense discretionary spending, including a 22% cut to border security funding. Their bill cut CBP’s budget by $4 billion, resulting in the loss of 2,400 officers. It also meant over $640 million in border security technology would no longer be operational.
I guess Republicans don't care THAT much about border security. 🤷
7) December 6, 2023, the
@GOP @HouseGOP blocked President Biden's $106 billion package of wartime funding for Ukraine and Israel — which included $13.6 billion for border security - to hire 1,300 additional border patrol agents, 1,600 new asylum officers and 375 new judge teams. It also called for $1.2 billion to counter smuggling of the deadly drug fentanyl.
I guess Republicans don't care THAT much about border security. 🤷
Don't let the
@GOP @HouseGOP @SenateGOP fearmongering and scare tactics fool you — THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE BORDER.
