What if States had opposed the Nazis requests to deport their Jews? 80 years ago, the Bulgarian people showed the very best of humanity. 48 000 Jews were saved from deportation to Nazi death camps, barely hours before their fates were sealed, following a wide mobilisation against the fascist government. But during the same time, the very worst of humanity was displayed with Bulgarian authorities sending to Treblinka 11 343 Jews from Macedonia, Thrace and Pirot. This week, we marked those historical events during an enlightening event @UNGeneva together with the Bulgarian Mission, @UN_Valovaya and Israeli historian Michael Bar-Zohar. The key lessons: Stand up for others. Never let indifference and hatred infect our societies.
